Dinner: John salad of wild garlic, goats cheese, grilled courgettes I'd promised John the wild garlic but of course it went and rained today. I have found a more local source of wild garlic, namely halfway up Crippetts, so not as bad as going all the way to Birdlip lamb with allspice, black pepper, pomegranate molasses; bulghar pilaff with barberries; squash roasted in yoghurt and ginger, spinach maple and pecan ice cream, medjool dates Vacherin, yarg, keens cheddar John likened the Vacherin to rotten forest floor We tried the wasabi chocolate and John guessed it was mustard (not bad) It is ages since we cooked for anyone, partly because we have been trying to tidy up the house |

Dinner: Michael This was an attempt at Keralan food. (And we showed Michael the holiday photos which are mostly of tea, vadas, porothas, dosas etc oh and steps) prawns in garlic and kalonji; dosas with sambar I got the mix to ferment all right but not quite getting the pancake consistency right. Tasted ok. Fish pollichattu, green beans thoran, dhal, sambar with bhindi, brinjal in cashew sauce, rice, ginger yoghurt Quite a lot of things, but that's what we were getting in the thalis. The sambar worked convincingly, and the brinjal curry was nice, and the beans. I think I overcooked the fish, but I was trying to do too much. The dhal turned out bitter, maybe it was the turmeric? I think we should throw out old spices Orange and Cardamom ice cream, orange syrup. same recipe as for John last year, very good. we tried out the wasabi chocolate on Michael but he didn't get the flavour, hopeless.. |

Tin=8" deepish one. One butternut squash, medium?? Filling 2 eggs, 5floz goast yoghurt, 2tbs flour, 1-2oz soft goat cheese, this all mixed in. Then 4.5-5oz of goat log, sort of cut into pieces. I roasted the squash in chunks for some amount of time, maybe 30 mins. Prebaked tart 20 mins. The filling took about 15 mins to set, maybe a bit more, at gas 5. It was very good orange, yoghurt sesame cake, yoghurt, orange syrup |
Monday 23.4 |
fried squid, green beans, caramelised cauli, rice noodles Colin is away. I think squid is best left to those with deep fat fryers. I tried the idea from Nigel Slater's page last sunday, of grilling cauli slices with sugar. Kinda worked but I wasn't convinced tarte tatin from the freezer |

The gf and spinach are sort of taken from Silvena Rowe's recipes - the kalonji really works well with spinach. The honey isn't too overpowering - I think I used 2 tbs total. squash saffron pannacotta |
